Many years ago Martha and I bonded over the fact that we are both originally from Baltimore. I can remember the commercials for her father’s camera store (Coopers Camera Mart!).
Although Martha is primarily known for her documentation of graffiti, her body of work is vast and goes back decades. From documenting the tattoo culture in Japan in the 70s (Tokyo Tattoo 1970), to the children of Baltimore and South Africa playing (Soweto/Sowebo), to unsupervised children making New York their playground (Street Play).
For this collaboration we looked through a tiny portion of her archives and found a photograph that resonated with me. We agreed on an image of kids jumping off a subway train taken sometime in the 80s. Although the train does have some graffiti on it, it is not the focus of the image. For me it was important that the photograph itself was the artwork, not the art depicted in the photograph. For me the subway is such a quintessential part of New York life, that i couldn’t resist. For me, this image represents New York, the city that has given me so much.
